As an ongoing effort the people from Krita (part of KOffice) are working 
on a fileformat for high-end raster images. Color management and 
(multiple)color spaces is one thing that came up there.

This topic is far to big for this list, or the TC list, for that matter.  
At this time the creators of the raster format are at the "Libre Graphics 
Meeting" where this is one of the topics.

I suggest you contact them to find out a way to make sure their research 
will benefit the goals you stated.  It would be great if you can help 
them out as well. :)
