Subject: Re: metadata competition
Now that I'm back, for the list; my original off-list email is at the bottom for reference ... FYI, I did download the latest spec, and was left fairly confused by their metadata approach. However, what is clear is that they are standardizing on what I've advocated we provide as standard modules for ODF: DC and Extended/Qualified DC. So Brian is right: they are offering broader support of DC than ODF now offers. However, while DCQ structures like isPartOf can be really useful for large documents, or for things like bibliographic metadata, I'm not really clear how they'll make use of it without some kind of general modeling and linking technology like RDF. A dcq:isPartOf element that is just a string isn't that useful.
