Subject: News Story on Open Document
Greetings! Take note that the Wall Street Journal today on page B2 has a very nice story about the Open Document Alliance. My only quibble with the article was that in a listing of some of the members of the Open Document Alliance it was preceded by: "Several companies and organizations have formed an industry group to promote *non-Microsoft* technologies." Actually that is not true. The industry group is trying to promote "open standard technologies." Microsoft is free to use it on a level playing field with everyone else. In future news releases and presentations, I think it is worth noting that ODF isn't about being *non-Microsoft* but about following open standards that are developed in standards organizations that actively promote broad participation. Open standards benefit vendors and users alike. From TCP/IP to wireless standards, open standards mean that software and devices simply work and cost less to develop and maintain. What is there to not like about open standards? Hope everyone is looking forward to a great weekend! Patrick PS: Thought for anyone on the Adoption TC. How about some PR about "Who is ODF?" and have ads that list all the organizations and individuals who have participated in ODF? Including KOffice, OpenOffice, etc. Makes a fairly impressive list of name and interests. Q: Who is ODF? A: People just like you and organizations just like yours. -- Patrick Durusau Patrick@Durusau.net Chair, V1 - Text Processing: Office and Publishing Systems Interface Co-Editor, ISO 13250, Topic Maps -- Reference Model Member, Text Encoding Initiative Board of Directors, 2003-2005 Topic Maps: Human, not artificial, intelligence at work!
