Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-1224) Public Comment:Conformance / validation / MathML redux (ODF 1.2 CD01)
[ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-1224?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=15746#action_15746 ] Patrick Durusau commented on OFFICE-1224: ----------------------------------------- Rob, thanks for the quick response! Actually there are two distinct classes of processors, validating and non-validating. Neither is a subset or superset of the other. Rather XML defines what content is processed by such processors. Both a validating parser and non-validating parser cover the same content, but a validating parser goes further to do additional validation. That is the rules applied to content by a non-validating parser are a subset of the rules applied by a validating parser. So yes, a validating parser run in non-validating mode is no different from any other non-validating parser. That does not answer the question Alex raises about validation of MathML. I suspect the question there is whether we are using "valid" in the sense it is used by MathML or do we simply mean well-formed XML? On the MathML definition of valid, see the spec that says in part: "A valid MathML expression is an XML construct determined by the MathML DTD together with the additional requirements given in this specification.
