Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Updated: (OFFICE-1475) NEEDS-DISCUSSION:Public Comment: draw:extrusion-first-light-harsh (ODF all versions)

Dennis Hamilton updated OFFICE-1475:
------------------------------------

Summary: NEEDS-DISCUSSION: Public Comment: draw:extrusion-first-light-harsh (ODF all versions) (was: Public Comment: draw:extrusion-first-light-harsh (ODF all versions))
        Fix Version/s: ODF 1.2 Part 1 CD 5
                           (was: ODF 1.2)
    Affects Version/s: ODF 1.2 Part 1 CD 4

The specification of harsh=true is not of interest in the graphics community. It is typically the default and not regarded as a feature. The specification of harsh=false is a matter of considerable interest and doubtless a variety of proprietary technologies. See OFFICE-2200.

PROPOSAL FOR RESOLUTION IN ODF 1.2.

 1. Define draw:extrusion-first-light-harsh="true" and draw:extrusion-second-light-harsh="true", the defaults, to signify default harsh lighting, where harsh lighting is defined as undiffused point-source lighting impinging on the scene/shape as established by the other attributes governing those light sources.

 2. Define the interpretation of draw:extrusion-first-light-harsh="false" and draw:extrusion-second-light-harsh="false" to each be implementation-dependent.

 3. Specify that draw:extrusion-first-light-harsh="false" and draw:extrusion-second-light="false" are each deprecated.

 4. If it seems warranted to include anything further, simply state that specific ways to identify non-harsh light sources is a subject for future specifications to address.

RATIONALE

1. Currently, there is no identification whatsoever of the significance for harsh="false".

 2. Absent any speciific contribution on the topic from subject-matter experts, it seems not possible for the ODF TC to define it.

 3. Since it is clearly implementation-dependent (assuming there are any implementations anywhere), we have provided no means for distinguishing between one implementation-dependent harsh="false" from another. To make this implementation-defined we need at a minimum some way to introduce nameSpacedToken values for identifying non-harsh light-source characteristics.

 4. The means of softening light sources in computer graphics and animation is doubtless the subject of serious proprietary technologies so we should be concerned about an implementation-defined (and certainly implementation-dependent) offering being seriously proprietary and not available for implementation under the same IPR regime as the OASIS ODF specification itself.

 5. I think the best thing to do is close this door as honorably as we are able and leave resolution for a future date.
