Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-2335) Lack definitions ofComplex Number as subtypes of Number and Text [NEEDS-DISCUSSION]

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-2335?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=18228#action_18228 ]

Dennis Hamilton commented on OFFICE-2335:
-----------------------------------------

For emphasis, I repeat my original argument. Complex Number is not a subtype of either Number or Text. Complex Number has no subtype.

Under Automatic Conversion, where a Complex Number argument is called for, we can perform an automatic conversion from Number (using Complex(n;0)) and we can also allow automatic conversion from text with provision of special syntax so that <number>, <number>i, <number>+-<number>i are all allowed.

It is inappropriate to provide automatic conversion from Complex Number to Number and we should not define it, requiring that explicit conversion be done (use of Real(complex) or whatever the function for that is). This way we don't run afoul of (future) formula implementations that decide to allow Complex Number as a type of Number, though I don't expect that to be a prospect for OpenFormula itself.

> Compex Number refers to complex numbers being subtypes of both text and number but we have no subsections describing the representation of complex numbers as subtypes of text or number.
