Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-2833) 7.7.2<text:placeholder> "The placeholder field's content is displayed in thedocument for the purpose of presenting further information about theplaceholder field's intention." intention? awkward

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-2833?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=19502#action_19502 ]

Dennis Hamilton commented on OFFICE-2833:
-----------------------------------------

It appears that the placeholder is not a field in the usual sense. The placeholder is *replaced* by entry of the appropriate type of content by the user.

I think the initial sentence should be something like

"The <text:placeholder> element is a placeholder for replacement by content of a particular type as specified in the mandatory text:placeholder-type attribute."

I would then append the sentence about display in this way:

"OpenDocument Consumers that support the <text:placeholder> element shall use the text:description attribute value in presenting the placeholder with its text content and in a manner that indicates it is for replacement by content of the specified type."

There is more to deal with here, since the the text of the element qualifies as inline text and these puppies might end up being involved in tracked changes, etc. I suspect placeholder elements are better described as replaced, rather than removed (with deletion as the usual replacement by nothing), whether replaced specifically or as part of a larger replacement.

There's probably another issue needed for this. Not sure how to frame it.

> 7.7.2 <text:placeholder> "The placeholder field's content is displayed in the document for the purpose of presenting further information about the placeholder field's intention." intention? awkward
> Fields don't have intention.
> Suggest: "The placeholder field's content is displayed in the document to assist a user to enter correct data in a field."
