Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-2771) 10.3.7 <draw:path>shape expression underspecified

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-2771?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=20909#action_20909 ]

Dennis Hamilton commented on OFFICE-2771:
-----------------------------------------

I don't believe that "outline" is the correct term. Outline suggests that the path will determine a figure by providing some sort of closed edge for it.

I suspect that a path is just that - a path. Namely some series of connected line segments where the form of the line in each segment is in accordance with given drawing parameters. Whether a brush or a shape is drawn along the path, I cannot tell from what little is said here, of course. Also, whether each segment is visible or not might also be controlled.

I notice that the SVG specification uses "outline of a shape" with regard to the svg:d attribute, but the actual definition of a path does not reqire closepath, and the impact of closepath internal to a series of path commands is also rather interesting.

What the path is a "path of" is going to depend on what element the svg:d attribute is part of. In the case of <draw:path>, to the extent that it is analogous to <svg:path>, there is a lot going on and there is no reason to presume that the result is a shape "outline."

> There is no information here on where the path-segment actions are listed and how their start points, end points, control points, and other parameters are found for coordination in the precise specification of the desired path.
> One can presume that the svg:d attribute can have something to do with it. Since draw is bound to a namespace under the authority of the ODF specification, it would be helpful if there was more about how this element and its siblings actually provide the information for the desired shape to be characterized in an OpenDocument Document so that it can be drawn correctly by an OpenDocument Consumer.
> I have no proposal for this. I assume that there is at least one implementation that could be reverse-specified to provide the necessary interoperable specification of the shape feature.
