Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-2750) 5.8: Error Literalsin References

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-2750?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=21603#action_21603 ]

Dennis Hamilton commented on OFFICE-2750:
-----------------------------------------

Andreas,

I don't think it is a new feature issue and in any case if you look at the date of the issue, you will see that it was created in June and so was Eike's solution. The only question under current discussion is why specify #REF! instead of simply allowing Error (i.e., some literal for an Error-type value)..

My comment proposes that the last statement in Eike's resolution should be a Note (that is hardly addition of a feature). I also suggested more text to the note, but only as a note. I think the use case is as Eike explains it. One might say that this is the use case in some soft way. I don't think the motivation behind the allowance of Error in a Reference is that people want to be able to enter them, even though that is not prohibited by the provision.

I hope we are on the same page in that respect.

> When a part of a refence has been invalidated (ex. deleting a column) it is often useful to show an error literal as the part of the reference that was invalidated. The reference syntax seems to indicate that a reference can be used in place of the sheetname, but the exact syntax doesn't seem clear.
> For example, if you have a formula that adds cell A1 and B2 and then delete column B, what will the resulting formula be?
> In Excel:
> Original formula =A1 + B1
> Resulting formula =A1 + #REF!
> In Calc:
> Original formula =A1 + B1
> Resulting formula =A1 + #REF!1
