I think even Patrick's merged definition omits the important fact that the component is either a report or a form. That's essential information. Just saying it is a "database component" not only says nothing, it is also misleading.

It is further incorrect to say  "Whether an already-present child element is replaced or is provided as information related to the [XLink]-behavior determination of the component is implementation-defined. "

A database document is a collection of forms, reports and connection data. The component elements we are discussing here simply list the forms and reports that contained in a database document as sub document. These sub documents are stored as sub documents in the package. For the case of flat ODF documents there is also the ability to include them into the document itself.
