Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-3423) The plural of theterm "index" in the context of "number to indicate position" is usually"indices"

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-3423?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=21941#action_21941 ]

Michael Brauer commented on OFFICE-3423:
----------------------------------------

Both, "indexes" and "indices" are correct English plurals of "Index", at least according the the dictionaries I've consulted. (Though interestingly, the spell checker of Firefox does only know indexes"). In the context of mathematics the term "Indices" however may be more common, but ODF is a file format specification (at least part 1).

So, I would not mind changing the attribute value if we would currently discuss a proposal a would have 3 months to go before ODF 1.2 is ready. But given that we have already passed a public review, I don't think there is a real justification for replacing one value with another one if both are correct.

Patrick: I have a preference for keeping "indexes" for the reason I've stated above, but will leave it up to you to decide which spelling to take. If we take "indices", please send the issue to me so that I can make the schema change.

> The plural of the term "index" in the context of "number to indicate position" is usually "indices". So in 19.286 form:list-linkage-type the second possible value should be "selection-indices" rather than "selection-indexes".
