Subject: [OASIS Issue Tracker] Commented: (OFFICE-1221) Public Comment: <text:s> element (etc) needs to be removed (ODF 1.2)

    [ http://tools.oasis-open.org/issues/browse/OFFICE-1221?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=31335#action_31335 ]

Dennis Hamilton commented on OFFICE-1221:
-----------------------------------------

The biggest problem with the recommendation is not that it removes (i.e., deprecates) some elements.

The serious consequence is that the proposal has to repeal the rule applicable to paragraph-content that has all white-space runs collapsed to single space characters and that leading and trailing white-space runs in text-delivering elements are dropped. This has nothing to do with what users see, because processors use <text:s>, <text:tab>, and <text:linebreak> as called for to achieve the proper effect.

This creates problems for hand-crafted and specially-generated XML files having paragraph-content runs. It also makes the creation of well-spaced and indented examples difficult, because they would not be usable directly.

In forensic work, I often use an XML "indenter" to make an ODF XML part comprehensible, and I may well store it that way back into the package (and with XML comments too). It is very handy.

I don't think that is a compelling use case, as valuable as I have found it, were the efficient processing of the XML at issue. (I don't think there is an efficiency issue.)

What I do find compelling is that the collapse of white space has been a principle for paragraph-content since ODF 1.0 and there are many ways it may have been taken advantage of. I see no reason to risk disruption and modification of processors that would, instead, have to control the explicit occurrence of spacing, tabs, and line breaks by other means and do damage to documents based on the current provisions.
