Subject: Re: ODF schema as downloadable artifacts for programmer (via Maven)

Svante, apologies for the delay in getting back to you. I wanted to check with Jamie Clark to make sure I give you a solid answer.

The OASIS copyright policy allows you to load a copy of the schema to a site like Maven so long as you keep the OASIS copyright text and notices in the file. One important note to keep in mind - the upload site cannot apply a different license to it. So you can't provide it and agree to different license terms.

Looking at Maven's terms of service, I don't see any problem there. Specifically, I see that it states "Applicable Licenses. Third party Materials available on Central may be accompanied by their own licenses or terms of use. The applicable licenses or terms of use which accompany any Materials you download will govern your rights and obligations regarding such Materials, and you agree to be bound accordingly."

Regarding Rob's original question about whether or not we'd want to be involved in defining the coordinates, I am copying Robin. He handles things like the IANA registrations and he may want to engage with you on it.

Best,

/chet

Hello Chet,

Some years ago Rob asked you the following question and I can not remember nor find the answer:
http://markmail.org/message/iz72lwk6p6pyxisk?q=ODF+schema+within+public+source+repositories+list:org%2Eoasis-open%2Elists%2Eoffice&page=1

I ask, as recently I run into the same legal problem with the Apache ODF Toolkit (Incubating) project when I put the ODF schema into the source code repository (being used for validation and source generation). The problem is that Apache repositories shall not contain unchangable artifacts as our schemas.

A good solution would be to bundle the schema files into a JAR file and put them on Maven (see Rob's explanation above).

If any TC member remembers the solution, I am happy for any help.

Kind regards,
Svante
