Subject: Re: [office] Approval of Office-3854 - Response needed by 1 June 2018 - or stands approved

Michael,

Regina says in a note to her proposal:

"I think "layout-environment" from 20.259, which was proposed in the issue, is not suitable. But you might find a better term than "environment"."

Regina will have to voice her concern but I would hazard to guess that "environment" implies something more than a specific set of conditions. Conditions for styles, for example, aren't triggered by nor do they produce an "environment." There are specific values that trigger a style.

I suggested "context" as an alternative since the element context determines the operation of the attribute.

Thanks for mentioning the other uses of "layout environment" in ODF 1.2:

19:836 text:list-tab-stop-position ".... In left-to-right layout environments this tab stop is interpreted as a left tab. While in right-to-left layout environments it is interpreted as a right tab...."

That looks like a global setting to me.

20.260 style:flow-with-text "... The layout environment of a drawing shape is determined by the location of its anchor. The following layout environments are defined:"

Followed by endnote, footnote, frame, page footer, page header, page text and table cell (area for all of them).

The location of the anchor fixes flow-with-text in "layout environments" defined by a stylesheet in each of those cases.

BTW, all the uses of "layout environment," except for the 2 in 19:836, are in 20:260. Yeah, surprised me too. Wasn't expecting that.

I don't think "environment" is the correct term but I'm not wedded to "context" if anyone wants to suggest another name.

Hope you are having a great weekend!

Patrick

There are two changes that would be necessary.

First, delete two (2) references to the layout document:

"The mentioned areas are illustrated in NN."

And, Regina suggests a literal value of "environment" for style:rel-height-rel attribute, whereas I think "context" captures the changes in behavior based on the context of the use of this attribute better.

i'm wondering why "environment" isn't considered suitable - the term "layout environment" occurs about 20 times in ODF 1.2 part 1... most often in "20.259 style:flow-with-text", and the usage in the new proposal looks to me like an obvious extension of the definition in the existing attribute - the extension is the definition for "frame" and "page" anchor types, which are inapplicable in the style:flow-with-text case.
