Been there, done that. We had a thread called
"Pixel Perfection" a while ago, where I outlined 4 basic classes
of document formats: http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/oiic-formation-discuss/200806/msg00188.html
There's your definitions. ODF is not PDF. And
no amount of wishing by you and 6 billion other people will make it so.
I'd argue that aiming for pixel perfection imperils
application independence even more, since it disadvantages non-desktop
applications like PDA's, cell phones, web-based applications, etc. It
also makes a format much more difficult to manipulate, combine, split,
mashup, etc.
In order to be able to do some things you must be
able not to do other things. The lack of pixel perfection in ODF
is one of its greatest strengths, IMHO.
