Subject: XPath support: define in spec or in profile?

The SPMLv2 protocol is rather generic, in that it is intended to support
at least two bindings (SPML 1.0 or "DSML profile" and XML Schema or "XSD
profile").

As I understand it, the requirement that a provider support XPath
expressions (as well as any limitation to that required support) applies
only to the XSD profile.

1) Do others agree? What of other possible profiles, such as (for
example) an HR-XML profile?

2) If XPath support applies only to the XSD profile, should the main
spec define the requirement for XPath support? Or should the main spec
simply mention XPath as one *example* of a language in which a value of
SelectType#path might be expressed?
