Sandy,

Some of us can remember making trips to our local ham-radio 
store to buy diodes, resistors and transistors and using 
soldering irons and makeshift pins to wire up an old
donated teletype machine as a "printer" and then using a 
neighbours spare B&W TV as a display.

You re-purpose what you have to hand.   Fortunately 
things are a little more sophisticated these days...
