Subject: RE: Hierarchical Catalog Records: Implementing a FRBR Catalog
Hi Farrukh, As you are aware, the field of Library and Information Science has had standards and processes to enable the electronic exchange of bibliographic information for over 50 years, and standards for the description and classification of information resources for hundreds of years. We just converted to electronic when the technology came along. This research paper is addressing the need to include a capability to link related records for materials so users can quickly find various versions or formats (printed book, audio-tape of same book, CD, etc.) I do not see any implications related to our work. The world of bibliographic description and the world of business to business transactions, while having some similarities (for example, the electronic exchange of information), are in different circles of purpose and use.
