The part that's called the "artifact binding" is not message-type-specific, the artifact can be a stand in for any kind of request or response. If you use it to send an AuthnRequest or any other message, the artifact is turned into a message by the recipient using a separate protocol over a separate binding, generally SOAP over HTTP. Lastly, I very much doubt you want to do this. Using the artifact binding for an AuthnRequest is highly unusual. Using it for the Response is more typical. -- Scott
