Subject: Groups - Action Item Modified: #0167 Investigate how other standards ...
OASIS Solution Deployment Descriptor (SDD) TC member, Mr Brent Miller has modified this action item. Number: #0167 Description: Investigate how other standards ... Owner: Mr Brent Miller Status: Open Due: 05 Sep 2006 Comments: Ms. Julia McCarthy 2006-08-30 15:05 GMT How do other specifications deal with compliance levels? It would be good to see examples. Action item: Brent: investigate this and report back next week. Mr Brent Miller 2006-08-30 18:00 GMT I reviewed numerous OASIS specifications and selected other industry standards. Observations: - "conformance" seems to be more popular than "compliance" for terminology - Most OASIS specifications don't define multiple levels of conformance. Some specify a few "random" pieces of conformance within the specification, but not "levels" - For those that specify multiple conformance levels (I found 2 such OASIS specifications), they use "profiles" to do so - At least one OASIS specification "punts" to WS-I to define conformance profiles - Some organizations also go so far as to specify conformance and certification tests. This doesn't appear to be something that OASIS generally does. My conclusion is that we should discuss the use of "profiles" for SDD conformance levels (perhaps a "basic" profile plus one or more others). I expect that these could be pretty straightforward, denoting the required functions/elements based on the outlines for "compliance levels" we currently have. Such profiles could be published independently from the specification itself. In addition, profiles define the levels of function/interoperability but don't imply compliance testing, which I think we don't want to do.
