Subject: RE: [soa-rm-editors] First pass
I don't want this turning ugly but I want to be frank and I may be a bit blunt: - if I'm proof reading, and juggling different possible wordings around, I want WYSIWYG; - I wasted an hour yesterday evening trying out new wordings, reviewing and discarding, within PDF, and gave up. That free time only came about because I got locked out of a conf call - my time is getting precious and I don't want to start learning new tricks; - the PDF hammer doesn't mean every problem is a nail: PDF (I use - and like - the full professional edition with all bells and whistles, I don't need comments enabled) is not WYSIWYG when in text touch-up mode: it is only used for pre-print re-touches, not editing. I am a writer not a software engineer; - version management and integrity is a bit on the fly, but KAVI does help a little. Locking down with pdf is not the answer; - the OASIS process requires us to release word-processable versions of any draft spec. when it goes for review, but we can't use one within an internal editing cycle?; - the insistence on PDF rather than word or openoffice is getting a bit too PC for my liking. It may pay your tab Matt, but someone pays mine too, to write and edit, not mess around with a tool that does NOT do the job I need done and - if there really are some tricks I've missed in editing in Acrobat7 - without a new learning curve to worry about. The alternative is that I send you a scanned copy of my hand-annotated notes, like in the good old days...! I do not want to be the guy who holds up the review cycle. It could have been a simple job and we're making a meal out of it.
