Subject: ITIL and SOA management
Some interesting discussion going on on the MITRE internal SOA list, and ITIL has turned up in the conversation. Here's a snippet. Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL v.3) - management by service and not technology is the message of ITIL v3. Service definition is the first (and most important step) in Service Portfolio Management (SPM), Business Service Management (BSM), Service Level Management (SLM) and IT Service Management (ITSM). ITIL v.3 has grouped service activity into the following 5 phases of a service life cycle:
The ITIL v.3 was released on May 30, 2007. ITIL v.3 focuses on Service Life Cycle which was missing in ITIL v.2. I would not be so certain that ITIL v.3 is a 'good fit' for SOA-based "business services" or "mission services". So my question is to what extent does ITIL have bearing on our thinking, especially as relates to management. As usual, I'm not suggesting "adoption" of ITIL, but is there something in the underlying thinking that we can/should/must use?
