OASIS TC Call for Participation: Materials ML TC

A new OASIS technical committee is being formed. The OASIS Materials 
Markup Language Technical Committee (MML TC) has been proposed by the 
following members of OASIS: Brett Johanson and James Pillers, Boeing; 
Carlos Beauchamp and Kent Reed, NIST; Michael Mitchell, NASA; and Craig 
Seymour, Individual member.

The proposal for a new TC meets the requirements of the OASIS TC Process 
(see http://oasis-open.org/committees/process.shtml), and is appended to 
this message. The proposal, which includes a statement of purpose, list 
of deliverables, and proposed schedule, will constitute the TC's 
charter. The TC Process allows these items to be clarified (revised) by 
the TC members; such clarifications (revisions), as well as submissions 
of technology for consideration by the TC and the beginning of technical 
discussions, may occur no sooner than the TC's first meeting.

As specified by the OASIS TC Process, the requirements for becoming a 
member of the TC are that you must 1) be an employee of an OASIS member 
organization or an Individual member of OASIS; 2) notify the TC chair of 
your intent to participate at least 15 days prior to the first meeting; 
and 3) attend the first meeting of the TC.

For OASIS members, to sign up for the TC using the new OASIS 
collaborative tools, go to the TC's public page at 
http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/materials and click on the button 
for "Join This TC" at the top of the page. You may add yourself to the 
roster of the TC either as a Prospective Member (if you intend to become 
a member of the TC) or an Observer. A notice will automatically be sent 
to the TC chair, which fulfills requirement #2 above. You must sign up 
for membership at least 15 days before the first meeting and must attend 
the first meeting of the TC in order to become a member.

Note that membership in OASIS TCs is by individual, and not by organization.

make comments on the work of this TC; the public may subscribe to this

PROPOSAL FOR THE FORMATION OF A MATERIALS MARKUP LANGUAGE TECHNICAL 
COMMITTEE OF OASIS

1. The purpose of this proposal is to form a Materials Markup Language 
Technical committee of OASIS

2. The purpose of the Materials Markup Language Technical Committee will 
be to enhance the e-business needs of materials producers, designers, 
fabricators, quality assurance, and failure analysis specialists by 
developing an XML-based standard markup language for the exchange of all 
types of materials technical information, while retaining its high 
quality and integrity despite its complexity.  The technology should be 
simple, easy to understand, and flexible as well as extensible. This TC 
will include an evaluation of MatML (www.matml.org), a materials markup 
language developed at NIST, in its activity. It is the intent of the 
developers of MatML to contribute this work to the new TC.

In the context of this application, “materials” includes, but is not 
necessarily limited to, all materials of construction, including metals, 
plastics, ceramics, and composites, and all of the elemental components 
of these materials.  The breadth of technical information includes but 
is not necessarily limited to: compositions, mechanical properties, 
physical properties, performance characteristics, and micrographic 
information, all in tabular, graphical, or photographic formats.

3. Liaisons will be established with groups maintaining other 
pre-existing XML-based markup languages for interfacing technologies, 
such as femML, chemML, and MathML, and also with the ISO/STEP committees 
handling materials information exchange.

4. The principal deliverable will be the schema for an XML-based markup 
language meeting the above requirements, with suitable illustrations of 
its application, by December 31, 2004.

5. The TC will conduct its business in English

6. The first meeting of the TC will be a telcon, hosted by Boeing, on 17 
September at 10:00 am ET. Participants will pay their own costs for 
calling in.

7. It is anticipated that the TC will meet approximately four times 
through the remainder of 2003, usually by telecon, and bi-monthly or 
quarterly through 2004 until the work is completed. Meetings will be 
hosted by the members of the TC on a rotating basis, and members will 
cover their own costs of attending.
