Subject: [xtm-wg] Re: XTM tag line
I'm voting for "mapping the web" (though I think Steve Pepper's "charting the web" is more poetic). A big problem, for me, with the GPS metaphor is that it's not part of my daily life. I think a major problem is that, for the person who doesn't know anything about TopicMaps, it's highly ambiguous - is it to be taken literarily, or metaphorically? So I imagine in a group of people who don't know anything about TopicMaps, maybe: 20% will ask, what is GPS? 20% I think I know what GPS is, but now I have my doubts 40% Oh, TopicMaps must be a system for attributing coordinates to the web. What does that mean? Maybe that deals with domain names. 20% Oh, that's a helpful metaphor.
