Subject: [ubl-lsc] XBRL UBL review package
The XBRL community has often underscored the importance and benefits of interoperability with other XML standards. Universal Business Language (UBL) is one such standard that is intended to become an international standard for electronic commerce freely available to everyone without licensing or other fees. UBL is being spear-headed by Jon Bosak, the original organizer of the group that created XML.
Interoperability with UBL requires substantive participation in reviews by the XBRL community.
To further facilitate this participation, I have created two documents. One is a XBRL-specific guide to the UBL package to help you navigate the current release. The other is a spreadsheet - I went through all of the UBL components (500+) and marked up a candidate list of the groups that may be useful to XBRL. The third document is a comment form used by UBL to track feedback. Please email me this form with your comments by April 10, 2003.
Hope you will find these documents, the following synopsis, and listed resources helpful in bringing you up to date on UBL, and in contributing to the interoperability between UBL and XBRL. Please let me know your availability for contributing to this effort.

XBRL Liaison to UBL

Here are the files.
UBL aims to define a common XML library for basic business documents like purchase orders, invoices, and shipping notices. UBL provides a standard set of XML building blocks together with a framework that will enable trading partners to unambiguously identify and exchange basic e-commerce documents in specific business contexts.
UBL builds on the Electronic Business XML (ebXML) infrastructure developed by OASIS and the United Nations.
An objective of the UBL is to foster interstandard dialog via its Liaison Subcommittee.
UBL can act as a core standard, mutually interacting and usable by other standards. For instance, XBRL, MDDL (Market Data Definition Language), RIXML (Research Information Exchange Markup Language), NITF (News Industry Text Format), NewsML, SDMX Statistical Data & Metadata Exchange) could potentially incorporate entities from, and inlay entities into UBL. This would create greater economies of leverage and enhance reusability. The notions of "information supply chain" would be enriched, and benefits of commonality will overtake the wastes of redundancy for all stakeholders working with these standards.
XBRL specifically, could play a noteworthy role both as a supplier of resources to UBL, and a consumer of such resources. Additionally, XBRL could be a catalyst for bringing other standards in the information and business reporting supply chains into the UBL sphere of interaction.
The Library Content part of UBL specifies a library of business information entities to be used in the construction of business documents together with a set of common XML business documents assembled from those entities.
