I've been using XOM (www.cafeaulait.org/XOM) to go back and forth from Java objects to XML.  I really appreciate the effort put into this particular XML API -- very simple and obvious.

Look at the vulnxml as seen in cvs.
It parses a VulnXML record into Nodes, i.e. an object tree using apache
digester.
If you change the dtd, you may rebuild the Node classes automatically
using org.owasp.tool.ClassGenerator (see ocl).
