Actually, I do like the XML format. It allows one (as you indicate) to 
use character entities (and define them). This means you define stuff 
like NS URIs, doc identifiers etc just once and use it N number of time. 
In addition, being text I can diff them (I know I can diff a word/OO doc 
but this is so much nicer and quicker).

I don't know of a way to define a charac entity (or equivalent) in OO or 
word.
