Hi Sanjaya and Ian,
well I think I am getting closer. So every activity has a coordinator whereas the way the coordinator has to coordinate the participants is specified in the WS-BA. 
In the scope of a business activity it is possible to have nested activities whereas the communicaton between a parent activity and a child activity happens somehow. 
the coordinator or  a component of a child activity can be a participant of the coordinator of the parent activity, in this case the participant has to register with the coordinationType of the parent coordinator although the way the child coordinator coordinates it's participants (atomic or mixedOutcome) doesn't matter to the parent coordinator.
