First, this is great.  I am greatly in favor of this.

I'd agree that it should augment, not replace, although there'll be an 
issue of protocol re: how we keep from "breaking up into discussion 
groups" -- the voice folks and the backchannel "whispering".

OTOH, it works for "talk shows" on the radio -- the callers vs. the 
email comments that the host/chair interjects when appropriate.  But it 
is harder to do in the car (wireless ain't that good (yet)).
