Let us not start putting in things and then start looking for use cases
for them -- one can always invent a use case for any feature :-)  If
compelling  use cases exist they should come to us first!

I propose that the proposal should be modified to eliminate rename.  I
agree that delete is needed for optional elements.

this is probably a bit of feature creep.  i was looking for examples of
syntax to model after, and came across a nascent standard called XUpdate
(http://www.xmldb.org/xupdate/).  i took everything that appeared
remotely
useful.  in my initial version, i stated that rename and delete were
questionable.  i think we need delete, but i'm less sure about rename.
i
don't have a use case for it in mind, but maybe someone else does.  if
not,
i'm happy for it to be removed from the proposal.

What was the motivation for the "rename" variant?  All the others seem
to be structural, and oriented towards handling optional and repeating
elements, which I thought was the original issue.

In today's conference call, we limited the scope of issue 11 to exclude
adding any new external dependencies.  Previously, of the 2 outstanding
proposals, I think the consensus was leaning more towards my proposal.
I
propose that anyone who cares to refine my original proposal, or take
the
discussion elsewhere please do so.  The goal is to have a strawman
votable
proposal on the table at the F2F and then go from there.  Here, for your
convenience, is a link to my original proposal.
