Hi Dee,
You are right in your observation that
these are busy times!
We finalized abstracts for two webinars
on our last TC call, but I've fallen behind on getting them to you. We
also had a call about the workshop at the symposium and think we can do
both activities (with a good deal of reuse of components in the best web
services tradition).
If you want to suggest some times I
can check with the volunteer speakers for the webinar on their availability.
We had talked about early March when the specification is undergoing
review. Is it possible to record and rebroadcast for other timezones?
Since these will be focused on different audiences and content, that
might be worthwhile.
Here are the abstracts:
Abstract: WS BPEL technical overview
Speakers: Charlton Barretto, Dieter Koenig, Frank Ryan
Business processes are the foundation of a Service-Oriented Architecture
(SOA). The Web Services Business Process Execution Language (WS-BPEL)
was designed to specify business processes that are both composed of, and
exposed as, Web Services. WS-BPEL (or BPEL as it is more commonly
referred to) is supported by a broad variety of both large and small vendors
as represented by their participation on the WS-BPEL TC (http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/membership.php?wg_abbrev=wsbpel
)
Business Processes specified via WS-BPEL can be portable; they can be carried
out by every WS-BPEL conformant execution environment. WS-BPEL is central
for defining SOA business processes.
This presentation gives a technical introduction to the WS-BPEL 2.0 language
for developers and architects interested in gaining an understanding of
the concepts on which it is based and how it can be used to compose Web
services. Specific topics include
- How BPEL fits with web services standards
- Differences between executable and abstract processes
- Overview of language constructs used to create executable BPEL processes
- Advanced features such as:
--- Partner links
--- Event Handlers
--- Fault Handlers
--- Extensibility
- Changes from BPEL4WS 1.1 to WS BPEL 2.0
- Status of the specification
Abstract: WS BPEL Business Value webinar
Speakers: John Evdemon, Chris Keller, Frank Leymann,

Attendee ROI:
This presentation will clarify the value that WS-BPEL can add to your existing
processes and examine some common scenarios in which BPEL should be used.
We will explain WS-BPELs role within a Service-Oriented Architecture
(SOA) and its relationship to other Business Process Management (BPM) initiatives.
We will also review a real-world use case to illustrate BPELs role
in an service oriented architecture.

Hi Diane,
I hope I didn’t drop the ball
on the Webinars. I know that you are very busy now. With the added Workshop
at the Symposium, I think this will be a very busy spring for this group.
Can we squeeze the webinars in before the Symposium? Is this the same set
of folks? Maybe there exists some reuse of materials for both.
It is a great idea to set two
different webinars. I am working with a group of ebXML TCs and they made
a good recommendation that I’d like to share. They are proposing two sessions
for each TC, one Euro-Asia friendly time zone and one US friendly time
zone.
Let me know if I can help!
Best,
Dee Schur

Hi Dee,
Please give us another week to finalize this abstract. We are going
to review this with the full TC, and also discuss with two other volunteer
presenters on our next call. We also want to plan another webinar
that would be directed more to users of BPEL - a business analyst or CIO
audience, that would talk about the business problems BPEL can solve, how
it fits in a overall BPM solution, etc. We'd like to hold them both
in the same timeframe directed at different people, rather than sequencing
them.
We've also started discussing the other possibilities you've brought up
and there is interest in some. Given workload to get through approval,
we're prioritizing these behind the webinars. I would advise against
attempting to discuss the future of BPEL at this point of time under the
auspices of OASIS or the TC. While there are many possibilities,
anything said at this point in time would be strictly individual opinions,
not the sense of the TC. Discussions in the context of an event where
the TC is the "speaker" could be misinterpreted. I think
at this time the TC should focus on how to best use what we have rather
than pointing to what else could be done and conjecturing on how those
additional requirements should be addressed, I'm sure those discussions
will occur in other venues.
