Subject: Re: [wsrp] PortletDescription clarification

This is a pair of SHOULD statements:
1. The first one says the Producer ought
to try (outside of good reasons) and request items using the names the
Consumer has said it can supply. This effectively requests the Producer
to do name mapping when it can.
2. The second one says the Consumer
ought to try (outside of good reasons) to supply data items the PortletDescription
is requesting. This restricts capricious withholding of data and requests
the Consumer to do name mapping when it can.
The net effect is that either side has
the option of conforming to the partner's field names and the spec says
they should try and accommodate each other.

WSRP 1.0 has the following text for userProfileItems:
•
userProfileItems: An array of strings that enumerate what portions of
the UserContext structure the Portlet needs to provide full
functionality. For the fields this specification defines, the named
profile items a Portlet uses MUST all come from the “Profile Name”
column of the table found in section 15. ****Any use of additional
userProfile items specified as available when the Consumer registered
SHOULD use the names the Consumer supplied. Any additional items
specified SHOULD be interpreted by the Consumer as additional items the
Portlet could use if the Consumer is able to supply the data.****
Can someone clarify what the text after **** means? These statements
seem to place a burden on the producer to use Consumer-supplied names,
which is quite unnatural for the producer. Shouldn't the burden be
placed on the consumer instead? These statements also force the producer
to change the portlet description after registration. One side effect is
that the producer will be required to maintain different portlet
description for each producer (even for POPs).
Regards,
Subbu
