Subject: RE: [xacml] IBM Patents

I guess I will have to track this down. I did have a recollection of the disclosures being amended. I was a little surprised the 2002 text had not been added to.

Can you tell me who on the IBM side was involved? I suspect no one currently at OASIS may know anything about it.

See http://markmail.org/message/fhuzbq4hbzee6o5k   IBM did follow up with OASIS to close this back in 2005 but it seems that OASIS staff did not do anything.

Richard,

Would it be possible for you to find out if IBM can provide additional, updated information, along the lines of your message to be posted on the XACML site? OASIS policy is to never remove a statement once it has been posted, but it can be added to.

Hal

Ray,

On July 10, 2007, IBM issued an "Interoperability Specifications Pledge" to encourage broad adoption of certain interoperability specifications. The core of the pledge is that IBM will not assert any patent claims against others for implementing these specifications, and that this pledge is "irrevocable", subject to a mutuality clause (that the other party will not assert claims against IBM or any third party for implementations of these specifications). XACML versions 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0, and several XACML profiles are included in the list of covered specifications, which has been updated a couple of times since the original pledge. I believe that IBM intends to continue to update the list of interoperability specifications covered under this pledge as related specifications and follow-on versions of listed specifications are developed.

Details of the pledge can be found at http://www-03.ibm.com/linux/ossstds/ispinfo.html . Please note that I am not an attorney and the paragraph above is my attempt to state IBM's Interoperability Specifications Pledge in layman's terms. Anyone intending to produce a software product or other intellectual property that may rely on this pledge is encouraged to consult with their own Intellectual Property counsel.

All,

The IPR section of the XACML TC page [1] states that there are IBM patents pending that may be applicable to XACML implementations. Have there been any new developments in this area since that statement was issued in 2002?

Thanks,
Ray
