Speaking of XRI adoption,
this would seem to be a great opportunity. Ideally XRI would be the default
identification and naming scheme, but having it be in the specification as an
alternative form would be almost as good. The XRI folks would need to sway Bill
Cox first I'd think, and then he can have XRI folks present their case to the
TAB. Is this possible?
To: OASIS members
The OASIS Technical
Advisory Board (TAB) has prepared a draft set of Artifact Identification
Requirements for potential use by OASIS TCs, as a more ordered method for
assigning names and URIs to OASIS technical work products. Comment
from OASIS members is welcome, and would be most useful between now and 27 July,
when the TAB plans to review all comments and finalize the draft.
The URI and method for comments is described below, in a
message from TAB Quality Subcommittee chair Bill Cox, who along with his
colleagues has contributed a great deal of thoughtful work to this
proposal. This draft, in turn, builds on earlier work from a number of
contributors led by Eve Maler, resulting in somewhat similar guidelines that
have been used voluntarily by some OASIS TCs for several years.
It is proposed that, when completed, these rules would
become the normative naming practices for TC outputs, so input from our user
communities is essential. Please let us have the benefit of your
comments.

Dear Colleagues:
The
OASIS Technical Advisory Board and its Quality Subcommittee have worked this
year to update and elaborate a set of informal document naming guidelines that
parts of the OASIS community have used for several years. Earlier
drafts have been shared with the chairs list; this draft is now
synchronized with the new IPR Policy and TC Process.
The current TC
Process rules permit us to apply uniform naming rules more broadly to OASIS TC
work product, in order to promote uniformity and facilitate the
successful use of finding tools.
The current
Working Draft 15 of new proposed OASIS Artifact Identification Requirements
("AIR") has been posted to our [oasis-member-discuss] space, at the URIs
below. The TAB has asked that we make it available for member review
during the month of July.
Please encourage editors
and other active TC members to review this document, as we will all be
affected by the greater formalization of artifact naming
rules.
AIR working draft 15:

The
TAB also has provided a short preface and list of questions:

Review
comments on the AIR should be posted by 27 July 2005 to:
mailto:oasis-member-discuss@lists.oasis-open.org
While registered OASIS members need not
join that group to send comments, they must join if they wish to subscribe and
thus receive copies of each response. The publicly-readable archive of
this list is located at:
http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/oasis-member-discuss/
the above URIs can be accessed by anyone.
We appreciate your
comments.
Thanks!
