Subject: document stage
Greetings, Dying laptop drives, major grant re-writes, etc., but still pushing on with the XMLvoc definitions! Let's take an easy one to see if we can get the interest back up in this process. ;-) The term is: "document stage." Well, I thought it would be easy. The usual suspects, Free Online Dictionary of Computing, Wilde's WWW Online Glossary, and TechEncyclopedia all came up empty on this one. Tried Googling, "document stage" returns 2,330 "hits," while "document version" returns "51,500" as of 20 June 2003. Note that "document version" comes up blank in the ususal sources as well. Still, I think "document version" is the more common term and suspect we should define it in preference to "document stage." The only counter argument I see is that documents do have stages in the standards process. Hmmm, seems like we ought to distinguish between versions and stages doesn't it? I could have a draft (as in document stage) that was the fifth revision (document version). But then stage would refer to status of a document in a process and is not really a stage of the document is it? In other words, the document occupies a stage, so perhaps document status? Hmmm, not as easy as I thought! Well, something to think about over the weekend! Recall that August and ISO meetings are not that far away! Will try to get back on schedule with the posting of definitions. Hope everyone is having a great day and looking forward to a great weekend!
