Subject: RE: XML.ORG Advisory Committee
Membership in OASIS and XML.org is open to all and Microsoft and other companies have been invited multiple times to participate. I myself have made this offer personally several times. IBM and Microsoft are business partners in many ways, and we will manage the cross-company relationship ourselves. Thanks for your opinion, Bob, but I would rather have Microsoft participate directly rather through a proxy. I think they can do that themselves, don't you? (And I continue to hope they and others join us.) In the meanwhile, we have bent over backwards to be inclusive of everyone in our work with OASIS, XML.org, and ebXML. We have directed many resources to making these organizations strong and high-profile. Michael and I acted informally as the coordinators of the XML.org SC. No one ever stepped up and said that they would rather do it. When it came time to make it official, we did the obvious thing. The OASIS board agreed. .......................................................... We have been trying in ebXML and in our own company to get Microsoft to work more cooperatively with us on XML standards initiatives, but they've been telling us and everyone else that xml.org and ebXML, where Commerce One has put a stake in the ground, are dominated by IBM so they aren't interested. I don't think that the OASIS board should tell the paying sponsors of xml.org who their chairman is, and the fact that IBM is treating the chairmanship as something it can pass down a line of succession makes it difficult to refute Microsoft's dogma -- the only reason that Michael was acting in the capacity of chairman was because IBM had done exactly that. We have to be concerned about appearances and I think that we ought to have someone from a nonthreatening company in prominent positions. I'm not campaigning for the job. I just want some procedures within OASIS and xml.org that would stand up to public scrutiny. bob > -----Original Message----- > From: sutor@us.ibm.com [mailto:sutor@us.ibm.com] > Sent: Friday, February 25, 2000 5:18 AM > To: xmlorg@lists.oasis-open.org > Subject: RE: XML.ORG Advisory Committee > > > The OASIS Board sets up the committee and chooses the chair. > We made the motion and passed it based on who had been acting > in that capacity. > > .......................................................... > Bob Sutor > Program Director, XML Technology > 716-243-2445 / Fax 716-243-1778 / Tieline 320-9138 > Cellular 716-317-6899 / Pager 1-800-946-4645 PIN # 1473757 > sutor@us.ibm.com > > > Bob Glushko <Bob.glushko@commerceone.com>@lists.oasis-open.org on > 02/25/2000 06:52:42 AM > > Please respond to xmlorg@lists.oasis-open.org > > Sent by: owner-xmlorg@lists.oasis-open.org > > > To: "'xmlorg@lists.oasis-open.org'" <xmlorg@lists.oasis-open.org> > cc: > Subject: RE: XML.ORG Advisory Committee > > > > > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: sutor@us.ibm.com [mailto:sutor@us.ibm.com] > > Sent: Thursday, February 24, 2000 2:54 PM > > To: xmlorg@lists.oasis-open.org > > Cc: parsons@xyenterprise.com > > Subject: Re: XML.ORG Advisory Committee > > > > > > If Michael so restricted, we want to have someone else > > additional on the committee who is able to do so.
