XML.ORG Goes Live with First Phase of Open Registry & Repository for XML
Schemas

Paris, France; June 13, 2000--OASIS, the non-profit XML interoperability
consortium, today announced public access to the first phase of XML.ORG
Regrep (http://xml.org), an open registry and repository for XML
specifications. Designed to foster collaboration and enhance communication
within industries, XML.ORG Regrep provides the community with a resource for
accessing the fast-growing body of XML schemas being developed for vertical
industries and horizontal applications. XML.ORG Regrep is unique in that it
operates in the open systems approach. It is not a commercial venture, but a
self-supporting resource created by and for the community at large.

“XML.ORG Regrep is something that has never existing before. It is the only
independent clearinghouse for XML schemas,” explained Laura Walker,
executive director of OASIS. “XML.ORG Regrep is not intended to be the one
and only resource for XML schemas. Rather, it was designed to serve as a
model for an extensible network of XML repositories distributed across the
web.”

“XML.ORG Regrep belongs to the community,” stated Jon Bosak (Sun
Microsystems), organizer of the working group that created XML. “OASIS
continues to seek input from users, other registry groups and standards
bodies on what people wants from this open resource. This first phase is a
call for participation, an opportunity to experience XML.ORG Regrep’s
potential and an invitation for the community to help determine the evolving
functionality of the registry.”

Industry groups and other organizations that have developed XML data
exchange specifications can freely register their work at XML.ORG Regrep.
The OASIS “no strings attached” submission policy ensures that developers
receive the benefits and recognition they deserve while retaining all the
rights to their work and control over its use.

“What we have today is a world-class application, created by leaders in the
industry committed to following an open standards process. Developers,
groups and companies can feel confident submitting their schemas to XML.ORG
Regrep,” said Norbert Mikula (DataChannel), chief technical officer of
OASIS.

>From its inception, XML.ORG Regrep has been a consensus-focused effort to
ensure interoperability with existing and emerging XML initiatives. XML.ORG
Regrep developers continue to work with the OASIS Registry & Repository
Technical Committee in its open process to define a specification for a
global network of repositories. This specification is intended to allow
interoperable registries to be created for use within industry
organizations, communities and corporations. XML.ORG Regrep will link to
standards-compliant repositories as they become available, as well as to
resources residing on its own site.

XML.ORG Regrep was developed by Documentum and Sun Microsystems. MORE
