(NASDAQ: SUNW), Palo Alto, California, has selected XyEnterprise Production Publisher (XPP) to automate the publishing of its SGML and XML content. XPP is a sophisticated composition system that offers high-speed automated throughput of SGML and XML data into formatted pages. Sun's primary initial use of XPP is to publish user documentation for its Solaris Operating Environment software in English, Japanese, and a variety of other languages as needed. "We selected XPP because of its speed, versatility, and automated support for XML," said Todd Freter, a program manager in Sun's Software Products and Platforms division. "We needed a strong, proven, powerful formatting engine to accommodate the demands that our page design makes on the process. This project is significant because it allows us to provide Sun personnel with state-of-the-art formatting technology as well as support for our XML publishing initiatives." Sun's implementation of XPP will serve the company's documentation groups across the United States as well as its European and Asian Language content production centers. XPP will enable Sun to rapidly produce Postscript and PDF output from SGML and XML data inputs. XPP styles will describe the look and feel of these deliverables. The software will be accessed over a network of computers running the Solaris Operating Environment software. Freter added, "XPP will greatly ease the administration and maintenance of multiple stylesheets for multiple language output for Sun. XPP also handles character kerning and other functions quite well, which leads to a better looking product. In addition, XPP provides an unbeatable rate of throughput as well as reliable, high-quality output for our printed manuals." "We are extremely pleased that Sun Microsystems has chosen XPP to automate the publishing of its XML data," said Richard Pasewark, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Xyvision Enterprise Solutions. "XPP is an ideal fit for XML and SGML based applications that require high-speed publishing capabilities to produce high-volume, complex content in a variety of formats and media."
