GCA announces details of XML Europe

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (23 March 2000) - The Graphic Communications Association
(GCA) has announced details of its upcoming XML Europe 2000 Conference. "The
Many Faces of XML" will take place from 12-16 June 2000 at Le Palais Des
Congrès in Paris, France.

"Whether you have been using XML and SGML and need to know the latest
developments, or you are new to the use of XML and want a complete picture,"
explained GCA President Norman Scharpf, "XML Europe 2000 is the
multi-faceted event you should attend."

Full- and half-day tutorials will help XML newcomers and will provide
opportunities for experts to explore key subjects in more depth. Up to six
concurrent tracks running throughout the conference's four days, as well as
the 18 concurrent tutorials held on Monday 12 June, will examine the many
faces of XML and related standards. Experts in a range of technical and
industry areas will discuss traditional uses of these standards (documents,
data, etc.) and newer applications such as eBusiness and the use of XML to
describe software processes.

"XML Europe explores the many different ways XML, SGML, and their families
of associated standards are being used now and will be used in the future,"
Conference Chair Pam Gennusa commented. "This is the GCA's annual
comprehensive event on applications, trends and technologies supporting
these standards, and delegates will find information for executives, as well
as business and technical implementers."

The conference will focus in part on core technologies. Delegates can learn
more on the status of standards promulgated by ISO, W3C, OASIS and
IDEAlliance. Examples include the DOM, Schemas, Topic Maps, XSL, XLink and
XPointer. A particular area of interest will be progress on the vocabulary
and registration work undertaken by XML.org. There are also applications
based on core technologies, including how XML is being applied to specific
vertical industries (education, finance, health, insurance, news services,
publishing, and travel.) and to topics that affect many industries, such as
eBusiness, graphics, knowledge management, and software engineering.

This year's opening plenary begins with Jeanne El Andaloussi of AIS, who
will introduce a roadmap to the wide array of foundation, horizontal, and
vertical application standards. Two large XML users will provide insight
into how XML is changing their businesses. Christian Lienert of SAP will
discuss SAP's current use of XML and vision for its future in eCommerce.
Kenneth M. Brooks, Jr. of Barnes and Noble will discuss the use of XML in
trade book publishing, where the company is merging two types of workflow to
create a highly successful digital printing operation using XML.

On Thursday, delegates will hear presentations and a panel discussion on the
availability of and support for standards by large vendors, including
conference sponsors IBM, Microsoft, and Sun. Other conference sponsors
include the W3C, XML.com, OASIS, Arbortext and POET Software. At Friday's
plenary, Mike Rogers of Sun Microsystems and Edd Dumbill, Managing Editor of
XML.com, will bring the conference to a close with reflections on current
trends and visions for the future.

"This is the 18th GCA conference to be held in Europe," continued Scharpf.
"GCA has long been a pioneer in markup technologies, and our experience and
expertise make this conference the premier international XML event."

An exhibit floor featuring over 40 vendor stands will complement the
conference offerings, sponsored by GCA's IDEAlliance in cooperation with
Camelot Communications. Delegates can see demonstrations of the tools and
technology on Tuesday from 12.30 - 19.00 (12 noon to 7 p.m.), on Wednesday
from 10:30 to 19.00 (10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.), and on Thursday from 10.30 to
17.30 (10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.). To register for XML Europe or any other GCA
conference, visit www.gca.org. For more information on GCA activities,
contact GCA Vice President of Communications Pete Janhunen at
