Subject: OASIS Member News:Software Development Tools Provider Selects Arbortext
Software Development Tools Provider Selects Arbortext XML-Based Epic E-Content Software Green Hills Software creates individualized online documentation through the use of Arbortext's personalization capability ANN ARBOR, Mich., August 8, 2000 -- Arbortext, Inc., a leading provider of Extensible Markup Language (XML) -based e-content software for e-publishing, e-commerce, and B2B e-marketplaces, today announced that Green Hills Software, Inc., has chosen Epic, Arbortext's flagship e-content software, to create and produce both printed and online documentation. Green Hills Software is the leading independent supplier of software development tools for embedded applications. Approximately 100,000 Green Hills Software products are in use worldwide by such companies as Ford Motor Company, Boeing, Qualcomm, Lockheed-Martin, Sony, Motorola and Lexmark. Green Hills Software maintains close to 8,000 pages of product documentation that cover compilers, debuggers, operating systems and related products that support 18 different microprocessor architectures. In order to reduce the effort to maintain existing documentation, and also to create new documentation as new products are developed, Green Hills Software needed to create modular content so they could easily reuse a single component of information across multiple documents. This meant that content created for one set of product documentation could be used again for a different set of product documentation without having to re-write or re-edit the original content. Green Hills Software also needed to reduce the editing cycle time of existing documents. With their previous system, this editing cycle could take up to 12 weeks from the time new content was received in the Technical Publications department until it was implemented in the product documentation. Using Arbortext's Epic software, Green Hills Software product engineers can now simultaneously update content in the product documentation while revising existing products or creating new products. No longer do the product engineers have to submit new content to the Technical Publications department and then wait for those edits to appear in the product documentation. Because Green Hills Software was able to simplify the editing process, accuracy in the product documentation increased. Errors that would sometimes occur in the product documentation due to misinterpreting the changes requested by the product engineers all but disappeared. Through Arbortext's content personalization capability, Green Hills Software is able to provide individualized product documentation based on product attributes such as type of operating system being used and type of product purchased. "We've been able to recognize immediate benefits using Epic," said Duane McInerney, Senior Software Engineer, of Green Hills Software. "Rather than passing edits to our Technical Publications department, our product engineers are able to edit the product documentation as product changes occur. This simple enhancement not only reduced our edit cycle times, but it has also increased the accuracy of those edits because the edits are no longer passed from one person to the next for completion." "With the magnitude of different product offerings that Green Hills Software provides, it was important to implement a system that could support both timely editing cycles as well as the ability to publish to multiple outputs from a single source," said PG Bartlett, vice president of marketing at Arbortext. "Green Hills Software is now well-positioned to continue to provide the most accurate, up-to-date and individualized product documentation to their vast array of global customers."
