Subject: OASIS Member News: XMetaL integrated into empolis' SigmaLink
Rimpar, Germany – March 19, 2001
empolis Content Management GmbH (formerly known as STEP GmbH) and SoftQuad Software, Ltd. (OTC BB: SXML), an internationally recognised developer of XML enabling technologies and e-business solutions, today announced the integration of SoftQuad XMetaL 2.0 with empolis’ SGML/XML content management system SigmaLink. The complete integration will be available along with the new release of SigmaLink Version 2.0 at the end of March 2001.
The integration of XMetaL with SigmaLink will allow organisations to more rapidly and widely deploy XML based content management. XML has become the accepted format for information interchange over the web, allowing businesses to categorise, search and re-use content for many e-business functions. XML content can also be easily re-formatted and presented to end-users in a variety of different media e.g. a web site, PDF, Print, PDA, etc.
One of the barriers to the wide-scale adoption of XML has been the difficulty that non-technical users have had in working with the format. XMetaL overcomes this because it can be easily customized to allow staff at all levels to write, review and submit XML documents without knowing anything about XML. This means content can be created and approved far more quickly, and it eliminates the need to convert or re-key information created in other formats, like word processing applications.
“XMetaL is the leading XML authoring environment and the integration with empolis’ SigmaLink provides an ideal platform for XML based content management” said Nick Mongston, MD SoftQuad Europe.
empolis’ SigmaLink is an intranet based information management and editorial system with full XML support, designed to handle all content management needs from creation to maintenance and storage of all types of formats to trigger multi-media publishing processes. With the most advanced linking capabilities, metadata management and versioning features, along with the ability to customize the workflow management system, SigmaLink has established itself as the ideal solution for the entire editorial process from end to end, for all enterprise wide content management, in commercial as well as corporate publishing.
SoftQuad XMetaL is an advanced, yet easy-to-use content creation solution
that brings the benefits of XML to an enterprise by enabling any person
in the organisation to easily create XML content directly, eliminating
document conversion costs. XMetaL is easily customised, allowing
developers to quickly create editing environments suitable for all users
and it can be seamlessly integrated into any e-business application.

SoftQuad is an early-stage growth company that operates in a highly
competitive and rapidly changing environment, and its business results
are dependent on numerous factors, including demand for its products and
services, especially its newly introduced MarketAgility product, growth
in the market for XML products, its ability to manage costs, generate revenues
and become profitable, the potential impact of any mergers, acquisitions
or other business combinations, the transition from its past reliance on
revenues from its HoTMetaL (HTML-based) product to its XML-based products,
its ability to meet its future capital requirements, technological developments,
competition from other companies that may have longer operating histories
or greater financial resources, protection of its intellectual property
rights, its ability to attract and retain key personnel, the resolution
of issues concerning commercial activities via the Internet, including
security, reliability, cost, ease of use and access, government regulation,
risks related to international sales and potential foreign currency exchange
fluctuations, political, business and social conditions in the geographic
areas in which it operates and in which its products are sold and other
risks detailed from time to time in periodic reports filed by SoftQuad
with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and other regulatory authorities.
SoftQuad’s actual results could differ materially from management’s expectations
because of such factors.
