NEOCORE SENIOR CONSULTING ENGINEER NAMED BIO-IT CHAMPION
Direen honored for work bridging information technology, life sciences research

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Aug. 26, 2002 - NeoCore Inc. Senior Consulting Engineer Harry G. Direen Jr. Ph.D. has been named a Bio-IT Champion by Bio-IT World, a national trade magazine focused on information technology for the life sciences.

Direen was honored for his work incorporating NeoCore's XML information management technology into systems that help life sciences researchers deal with vast amounts of information. Through NeoCore, Direen has helped genomics biologists share their research, and University of Colorado Health Science Center researchers study gene expression arrays.

The Bio-IT World honor places Direen and NeoCore among 74 influential technology leaders recognized by the magazine for their commitment to the convergence of information technology and life-sciences research.

"It's certainly an honor to be chosen a 'Champion,'" Direen said. "I find this field extremely fascinating, because the rate at which we're learning and understanding more about biology is ratcheting up so fast. We have a tremendous amount to learn from biology, and NeoCore is helping life-sciences researchers manage all the information they're gathering. It's a very exciting time."

Direen drives the technology focus in the company's life-sciences research and development group. In that role, he has spearheaded collaborations with researchers and academics at the University of Colorado's Denver, Colorado Springs and Boulder campuses, and often speaks and conducts seminars on the intersection of life sciences and information technology. He also manages NeoCore's relationship with the Center for Computational Biology at CU-Denver, which led to the CU Health Science Center using NeoCore's flagship product, NeoCore XML Information Management System, to analyze gene expression arrays.

Harvey Greenberg, director of the CCB, said Direen's commitment deserves recognition. "Harry has bridged the academic and business worlds, and both NeoCore and the CCB have benefited," Greenberg said. "Harry has recognized information technology issues faced in the life-sciences industry and how NeoCore's technology relates to the bio-informatics world. His persistence and follow-through are rare, and they bring results."

Ric Miles, NeoCore president and chief executive officer, said the Bio-IT World honor is a credit to Direen's commitment and a win for the entire company. "We're very proud of Harry and his work," Miles said. "This award is important from NeoCore's standpoint because we're providing a novel solution to an industry that is dealing with tremendous amounts of changing information. Through Harry's efforts, and with support from the whole company, we're giving researchers new tools to manage this very important life-sciences information."

A feature on Direen and his work in informatics tools and data is posted on Bio-IT World's Web site, www.bioitworld.com.
