BEA Systems Drives Convergence of Application Integration and Application Development with BEA XMLBeans

Technology Innovation Revolutionizes Java and XML Interoperability and Increases Productivity for Java Developers

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Jan. 27, 2003 - BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), the world's leading application infrastructure software company, today introduced BEA XMLBeans, a revolutionary technology innovation designed to improve developer productivity and ease-of development by making it far easier to incorporate XML (Extensible Markup Language) data into Java. BEA is working to drive convergence within the enterprise by creating one common framework for business process modeling, application development and enterprise J2EE development. Developed in line with this goal, BEA XMLBeans simplifies the process of incorporating XML data into Java applications, enabling developers to focus their time and expertise on value-added development and decrease time-to-market of enterprise and Web services applications.

With the dramatic growth of XML-based applications such as Web services, accessing and manipulating XML documents from Java applications has become increasingly critical to the enterprise. Customary approaches to incorporating XML data with Java, such as using traditional DOM or SAX, are difficult and time-consuming. Other approaches to connecting Java data models and XML often result in a loss of data due to the fundamental differences between the two languages. This requires developers to re-code information and create custom linkages.

With BEA XMLBeans, developers no longer have to make these compromises. BEA XMLBeans gives developers a familiar and convenient Java object-based view of XML data. Unlike other Java "binding" solutions, BEA XMLBeans enable programmers to maintain the fidelity of raw XML data and still gain the productivity and flexibility benefits that Java provides.

"It's hard to overstate the value of BEA XMLBeans for Java developers," said Tony Hong, co-founder of XMethods, a popular Web site for the Web services development community. "XMLBeans, with its very impressive support for the XML Schema specification, lets Java developers generate, consume, and validate even the most tightly-constrained XML documents with both ease and accuracy, while preserving the fidelity of the original native XML. We are very excited about the development productivity gains and the easier Web services interoperability that BEA XMLBeans will help provide."

"Many organizations are making heavy investments in XML data and information exchange due to XML's unique ability to work across operating platforms and programming languages - a necessary ingredient for building dynamic applications and Web services," said Adam Bosworth, chief architect and senior vice president of Advanced Development at BEA Systems, Inc. "However, leveraging the full richness of XML within Java has always been a great challenge, and BEA XMLBeans helps make this a reality while shielding developers from the underlying complexity."

Availability
The technology preview of BEA XMLBeans is available immediately to all developers. BEA XMLBeans is available as a free, hosted service at http://dev2dev.bea.com/techtrack/detail.jsp?highlight=xmlbeans
