Subject: Draft memo about why experts in AR should share their experience and knowledge with ARIP members

Hi folks,

One of my actions from a previous meeting was to come up with a draft about why experts that we approach for assistance should help us, what is in it for them, etc? Here is my first stab at the memo, can you please review and provide feedback?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What benefits will you get from helping the Augmented Reality in Information Products (ARIP) technical committee?

We hope that you are able and willing to lend us your time and knowledge to help us create comprehensive and useable guidelines and standards. We are approaching you because you are already contributing to the field of augmented reality in your workplace and you have that extra bit of knowledge and expertise that can help us create best-in-class examples. You have obviously experienced and hopefully resolved some, or all of the issues and pain-points of working with AR and by sharing this knowledge with us you can ensure that others will have a smoother and more efficient experience as they begin working with AR. This will ultimately help organizations quickly and effectively adopt AR and make it a more widely used technology. On a more personal level, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that your examples and work experience may help influence industry standards. Additionally, this will also give you an opportunity to informally network with committee members and share your experiences with a team of AR and technical communication experts from across many different industries.

What is the Augmented Reality in Information Products (ARIP) technical committee?

The OASIS ARIP technical committee was chartered to define the introduction and implementation of augmented reality (AR) into information products by developing standards, specifications, and guidelines for all types of communicators. Members are developing standardized content models for authoring augmented reality experiences to promote the use of augmented reality as a new feature in information products. By raising awareness of the benefits offered by AR, the ARIP TC expects to increase the demand for, and availability of, AR-enabled products and services, resulting in a greater choice of tools and platforms. Here are few goals and deliverables of the ARIP TC:

·         Research and investigate the existing use of augmented reality in technical communication to identify and better understand the issues and pain-points of using AR to enrich information products. We expect to deliver a report outlining the results of this research.

·         Research and understand existing AR standards, especially those related to technical communication (if any) so as not to duplicate existing work. We expect to deliver a report outlining results of the research.

·         Solicit opinions from AR experts, AR vendors, industry associations, academia, journals and other bodies responsible for standards development to serve as input towards developing an initial set of specifications for using AR to enrich information products.

·         Create an initial set of specifications for developing AR enriched information products that will permit all types of communicators to more easily adapt their existing work processes to develop AR enriched content. The specifications will eventually be turned into standards after balloting by OASIS membership.

·         Develop a set of best practices directly related to the development and delivery of AR enriched content. We expect to deliver a best practices report for AR content developers.

The TC members will also promote and publicize the ARIP TC and its goals and specifications via webinars and presentations at trade conferences.

What is OASIS?

OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) is a nonprofit consortium that drives the development, convergence and adoption of open standards for the global information society. It was founded in 1993 and it promotes industry consensus and produces worldwide standards for security, Internet of Things, cloud computing, energy, content technologies, emergency management, and other areas. OASIS open standards offer the potential to lower cost, stimulate innovation, grow global markets, and protect the right of free choice of technology.

OASIS members broadly represent the marketplace of public and private sector technology leaders, users and influencers. The consortium has more than 5,000 participants representing over 600 organizations and individual members in more than 65 countries.

OASIS is distinguished by its transparent governance and operating procedures. Members themselves set the OASIS technical agenda, using a lightweight process expressly designed to promote industry consensus and unite disparate efforts. Completed work is ratified by open ballot. Governance is accountable and unrestricted. Consortium leadership is based on individual merit and is not tied to financial contribution, corporate standing, or special appointment.

OASIS members have developed more than 80 standards to date. The most widely adopted ones include AMQP, CAP, DITA, DocBook, ebXML (ISO 15000), EDXL, MQTT, OpenDocument Format (ISO 26300), OSLC, SAML, WS-Security, and XACML.
