I agree with SOAP, ebXML and XMLP. I also share your hesitation with http and smtp. The first three XML transports can or will be able to bind to HTTP, SMTP, BEEP, etc, so there might be a lot of reinventing that will occur to bind to those lower layers. The WSDL 1.1 spec provides the following bindings: SOAP 1.1, HTTP GET, HTTP POST, and MIME. I believe MIME falls into the same category as http and smtp, where the higher layer xml transports will provide bindings to it (as is the case for SOAP + Attachments.)
