I seem to have suggested hex string, though free-form string would actually seem nicer if the matching would work.

As long as we specify, I'm not too bothered. However, don't we stipulate that hex-string is used for identifiers (or something - I haven't got the spec to hand). If so, it would seem like we could match these up by making is a hex string too.
