Subject: [business-transaction] RE: The winner is..
Hi Sazi, (cc'd to the list because others might want to know a little about the F2F location) Newcastle upon Tyne is the regional capital of the north-east of England. It is situated some 110 miles south of Edinburgh, and 250 miles north of London (which is considered to be the other end of the country!). Newcastle itself has a long history, but attained its name from Roman times where, as part of the fortifications against the Scots, a "New Castle" was built on the river "Tyne" to reinforce the garrisons stationed on Hadrian's Wall (Hadrian's Wall is like the Great Wall of China, but smaller and was designed by the emporer Hadrian to keep out those nasty Scots!). If you're planning to take some time here, then there are a number of places of interest to see both in Newcastle itself and in the surrounding areas. Newcastle is a vibrant city with a renound party scene, along with plenty of historical and cultural attractions. The city is delimted by the river Tyne to the south, and the countryside of Northumberland to the north. Northumberland and the coastal areas are really pleasant places to walk and see some (mainly roman) archaeology. Some useful URLs: http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/home.nsf/a/vishome?opendocument http://www.bbc.co.uk/tyne/ http://www.newcastle.org.uk/ Other useful facts: The inhabitants of Newcastle (and North Tyneside) are called "Geordies." This is because they remained loyal to King George (I forget the numeral) when the Scots decided to kick-off sometime in the past. The arch enemies of the Geordies are the "Mackams" who inhabit a town called "Sunderland" about 15 miles south of Newcastle - you must always say the word "Mackam" with disdain :-) Two things are important to Geordies: beer & football. Everything else is just stamp collecting. Newcastle is cold, but Geordies don't feel it. You will be surprised to see that summer dress is the norm all year round. Travel: If you're travelling by air, then you can you'll need to fly into one of the London airports and catch a connection to Newcastle (transfer takes an hour or so). By train from London takes about 2.5 hours (from King's Cross). The train station is right in the thick of things in the city centre (and about 50 metres from HP's lab), the airport is a 20 minute metro or taxi ride from the city centre. The nearest hotel is the Royal Station or thr Thistle. Other (nicer) accomodation includes "Mal Maison" and the "Vermont" both of which are situated on the quayside. For information: HP's Arjuna lab location details: http://www.arjuna.com/contact.html Hotels: http://www.aboutbritain.com/Newcastle-upon-TyneHotels.asp (Copthorne, Vermont, Mal Maison, Royal Station, Quality Hotel are all in walking distance, amongst others not listed on this page). Anyway, hope this is enough to whet your appetite. Please drop me a line if you want to know anything more. Jim
