Another option here is to illustrate creating OASIS CAM templates. 
This would give you some additional flexibility compared to the schema
approach - and give you the added bonuses of:
 
a) being able to use explicit context parameter declarations and rules
to structure associations
 
b) automatically prepare a matching sample XML structure instance
directly as a transaction template for implementers (the CAM template
will contain this master blueprint)
 
c) ability to use sub-assembly structures that can be included in
automatically for common component sets.
 
The approach you have taken here however for XSD looks solid and
insightful - these techniques can then be extended and applied as I
note above.
