Yeah, I hear you about subversion, but its been in wide use for a while now and its only still in beta because any failure would be critical. Also, clients are actually pretty easy to get for all platforms and they are only needed if you want to "commit". I believe TortoiseCVS has a subversion client as well, for example. 

I'd be fine with CVS (so long as there was SSH access - I can't do the CVS protocol through our firewall here at visa). There are other problems with CVS, such as the lack of support for versioning/tracking directories, and the fact that if you want to use some more advanced features (such as cvs edit/watch), the terminology and some of the mechanics are FAR from intuitive.
