Subject: Why Rules and Following Them Is Important (CloudAuthZ Appeal)

Greetings!

I hope everyone who celebrated a holiday last week had a great time and have returned to work, ready to end the year with a final run for the finish line!

You may have missed the CloudAuthZ appeal in your back log of email. If you did, you can read about it at: https://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/cloudauthz/201211/msg00000.html.

I have been asked off list if the CloudAuthZ appeal is really important?

I think so and the reasons are important enough to reply publicly.

1) Has a TC Admin ever asked you to rename a document, edit it, correct errors, redo ballots or votes? So that you would be following the OASIS rules?

If OASIS rules apply to you, shouldn't they apply to other OASIS members?

Rules are, well, rules.

To be a rule, instead of a wish, some advice, a good idea, a rule needs to be enforced.

Fairness dictates that rules be equally applied to all OASIS members.

2) The OASIS TC process gives the public and OASIS members a transparent view into the OASIS process.

The current process guarantees everyone sees comments made on a charter and any responses by a TC's proposers. As part of the call for participation. The one time notice of the TC will be broadcast far and wide.

In the CloudAuthZ case, no non-TC member who saw the call for participation, had an opportunity to know about comments on the charter.

There is no curing the failure to include a comment resolution in the original call for participation. That opportunity for notice to the public and potential members has been lost.

3) My favorite:

With a good process, the results may be uneven but the process will keep us from utter failure.

If we have no process or rules at all, the results will reflect it. And reflect badly on us and the OASIS brand.

A good process means rules, not sometimes, not occasionally, but everyday, for everyone.

I urge you to reach out to other OASIS members and Board members, asking them to support an equally enforced TC process for all OASIS members.*

Hope you are having a great week!

Patrick

* Yes, I am the first to grumble when rules "get in the way" but I try to follow them, however unhappy I may be. ;-)

I would rather live with rules than without them.
